VRA

Allan, I don't have time to write this up, but VRA was mentioned on briefing.com as a speculative bird flu play -- a cheap one you don't already own. Also, they found a link to a site in mexico, written in spanish, suggesting that a duck there died from bird flu - don't know if it's true, but VRA looks like a good buy here with more bird flu news. - Ilene

I'm in VRA as of 0.65, pure speculation while Ilene and I and anyone else who is a mind to, does some homework on it.

This company uses eggs to develop human vaccines, with bird flu I think we should not buy it. I may be wrong.

According to briefing, they would develop transgenic chickens to lay virtually unlimited numbers of eggs..... they'd probably make sure these birds don't get sick.

NVAX is a better play! their vaccines are not made from eggs.

Looks like most of the pure bird flu stocks lost quite a bit.

I think the next thing is going to be VOIP. For that I've got Covad Comm. DVW the company behind the free Google wireless service in San Francisco, and other cities.

Go for it Alan. I've got two macs now and I LOVE them. Keep your old PC for running some programs, but go for the Macs! Get a Nokia 770 web tablet whiley you're there!

ALAN might be getting some serious traction today...then again it might not :-)

Today the company announced another in a string of small contracts.

The prison market in the USA is enormous. We incarcerate more inmates than all the other nations of the world combined. That's no exaggeration, just a little known fact. As an example, little ALAN is hoping to get a small piece of a 300M budget increase for LA County and investors are anxious for the forthcoming news That's just one jurisdiction out of thousands in the country. The entire prison system is a multi-billion dollar tempest in a teapot. Modernization is underway and for every problem there is an opportunity for investors.

Bird flu may or may not turn into a worldwide pandemic. Locking up people is already a pandemic. 13% of all black males in their 20's and 30's are in jail at any given time. The trend chart of prison population has been going up since 1980 when we went on a prison building binge. Now the prisons are full and busting at the seams.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find some investment opportunities in the midst of all this human chaos. One of my reasons for liking ALAN is that their technology will make these prisons safer and more humane. Monitoring technology for people in prison or on probation/parole is going to be big business. To put it succinctly, the status quo sucks. The times they are a changin'.

Thanks for the update Roger, I agree, ALAN is an interesting speculation. That said, I am having trouble getting past the symbol, as I have always thought the proper way to spell that name was ALLAN. Of course most ALAN's I have confronted in my lifetime have felt the exact opposite. But one thing we all had in common was our absolute loathing for ALLEN's, or even worse, ALEN's. Yea, it's been that kind of day.

Roger,

If bird flu hits, it will be the population of incarcerated prisoners(and others living in very tight quarters, like dormitories) that are hit the hardest. In the worst case, the bird flu stocks would be up , and the prison stocks down (no more prisoners to worry about). I guess that is not really funny. sorry.

Holly,

And if the Iranian's nuke Israel all of our portfolios are going to go up in the same mushroom cloud :-)

We have chickens. We keep them incarcerated at all times and am considering monitoring them with RFID chips.. Cute little buggers (yes, they do love their bugs)....but I take their temperatures every hour and nuke their eggs in a microwave before I eat them. One can't be too safe.

Roger,

Do you really microwave eggs before you eat them? For how long? Are you trying to kill something on the inside of the shell or the outside? Forgive the questions, but that is new to me.

how do you take a chicken's temperature? holly

Holly,

Ahem, I was posting with tongue in cheek while trying to combine the twin topics of incarceration and bird flu. Forgive me for trying to be too clever. Interesting fact though....chickens have a cloaca (look it up) which is multi-purpose for all functions including taking their temperature...which I have yet to try and have no immediate plans to perform :-)
